In 2023, Baidam established Australia's first Indigenous manned and operated Security Operations Centre (SOC).

It was officially opened on 26 April 2023 by the Hon.
Clare O'Neil MP, Minister for Home Affairs, Minister for Cyber Security, and the Federal Member for Hotham.

Built using an Indigenous co-design methodology, we have created a modern-day SOC where First Nations and diverse individuals can grow and thrive. Our goal is to provide training and experience that offers pathways for Australia's future First Nations to become cyber leaders.

What makes our SOC so different? Our SOC is unique in terms of the physical and technical infrastructure we have built, and our commitment to hiring and certifying Indigenous staff, and harnessing diverse ways of thinking and problem-solving.

Gundan

noun /Goon-dun/

Our SOC was gifted the name “Gundan Security Operations Centre” by Dr Sandra Delaney, a Nunagal, Goenbal Ngugi woman who holds a PhD on the reclamation of the First Nations language.

Gundan (pronounced Goon-dun) in the local Yagara/Jundai language means shield and represents the function of our SOC, which is to protect the environment and its inhabitants.

Our environment

The physical appearance of the SOC includes the striking white, blue and green Baidam artwork on its walls and desktops. Each desktop represents where our SOC members come from.

Baidam stands for both First Nations saltwater and mainland peoples. So, the colour and style of our artwork acknowledge the Torres Islands flag and the peoples of the Torres Strait, the ocean, and mainland Aboriginal peoples.

Our environment extends beyond appearance, though. We believe that experience should be shared; it is a gift from one generation to the next. So, the physical layout of the SOC has been purposely configured so our junior team members are seated next to senior team members or "knowledge holders" who can mentor and advise them.

Our people

First Nations People use an array of tools to undertake their daily tasks and cultural chronicles. Each tool is essential to the enrichment and protection of the community.

Combined with our Indigenous Employee Mentoring Program, our ongoing investment in certifications and continuation training provides our employees with a best-in-class technical capability and a career pathway in cybersecurity.

We are proud to say that today, over 50% of our SOC employees identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

Our SOC partner

Our SOC was designed and built in collaboration with cyber security innovators and SOC specialists Tarian Cyber.

Developing the co-designed project took eight months’ worth of consulting work and user group feedback, international research, and travel to other global security operations centres of our supportive customers.
